It has been more than 25 years since The Brady Bunch went off the air, yet the only thing some fans still see when they look at Maureen McCormick is "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia."
"And you know what? I think they always will," McCormick says good-naturedly about her signature character. "Whenever you're in a show that has become so much a part of our culture, I think that's unavoidable."
Not that she is complaining. Even though there are a number of other highlights in her life--from playing the lead role in Get to the Heart: The Barbara Mandrell Story (1997) to playing real-life mom to a 10-year-old daughter--McCormick also cherishes the way The Brady Bunch (1969-74) has connected with viewers over the years.
"The nicest part of all of that is what it seems to have done for people growing up," says McCormick, a dream girl to a generation of adolescent boys, yet also popular with female viewers. "This warm spot they have for the show, it amazes me."
Who would have dreamed this innocuous family sitcom would become one of the most enduringly popular shows in TV history? "It's actually funny," McCormick says. "When we were doing The Brady Bunch years ago, we were so serious about it. Now I look at it and it's like this big campy comedy we just laugh at."
In recent years, McCormick, 43, became a country singer, releasing her first solo album in 1995, and returned to TV in 1997 as a sitcom mom in Teen Angel. But neither music nor acting, she notes, takes priority over her businessman husband Michael Cummings and daughter Natalie. "So much of my life is being with my child and her friends and going to school and participating in that. That really is my favorite part of my life."
