This lady has a distinct advantage over most singers making a solo debt at 38. McCormick carries a built-in-and incredibly indelible-recognition factor: As a teenager she played Marcia, the effervescent eldest daughter in The Brady Bunch, one of the most enduring and influential bad shows in the annals of television.
For her maiden voyage, McCormick adopts that most accommodating of musical styles: country. The arrangements tweak all the twanging tools of the trade, including pedal steel guitars, fiddles and honky-tonk pianos. But, except for a limpid duet with Nashville singer-songwriter Wayland Patton on "We Must Have Done Something Right," McCormick doesn't bring much conviction to the material. Yet she does possess a sweet, rather pure timbre.
Oh, lets just call a spade a spade: It's a very Brady sort of voice. Forget the Nashville accent; Maureen would be better off trying straight pop, maybe even covering nostalgic Top 40 tunes from the 1970s. That kitschy stuff, after all, has a remarkable shelf life. (Phantom Hill) David Hiltbrand
