Transition
Fitting tips
-
-
The general principle of safe
and effective fitting is to keep the rider’s center of
mass positioned midway between the wheels. During the
growth-spurt years, about two-thirds of a child’s growth
(~8) occurs in their legs. Consequently, most of the
fitting adjustment is simply accomplished by raising the
saddle and handlebars. The other third occurs in
the torso. Moving the saddle back 2” and the handlebars
forward 2” will keep the center of mass in roughly the
same place.
-
-
The Transition’s standover
height is safe for a 50” rider. The wheelbase is stable
for a 62” rider. The handling characteristics
(fork trail and front-to-center dimension)
mimic an adult racing bike.
-
-
Saddle height (distance from
the top-middle of the saddle to the center of the crank
spindle) can be set via several guidelines; including, but
not limited to:
-
a.
87% of the
rider’s inseam measurement,
-
b.
15-25°
of knee bend when the pedal is farthest away (in the 6
O’clock position) with the ball of the foot over the pedal
spindle and the foot set parallel to the ground,
-
c.
Straight leg
when the pedal is farthest away (6 O’clock position) with
the heel of the foot over the center of the pedal spindle.

The standard 250 mm seat post
will enable 43--60 cm saddle heights. Saddle heights less
than 52 cm require cutting the seat post to avoid it
contacting the mid-tube of the frame. The 350 mm seat post
will enable saddle heights from 60 up to 70 cm.
-
-
The seat boom has 7 cm of
telescopic adjustment. The minimum insertion--indicated by
the paint line on the cromoly booms--is also 7 cm. The
boom position is fixed by tightening the bolt on the left
side of the frame cowling with 15 lb.ft. of torque. The
boom holds the seat post in a 71°
angle. Consequently, as the saddle height increases, the
effective top tube length increases without having to
extend the boom. Please refer to
geometry details.
-
-
Adjustments to the handlebar
position is accomplished three ways:
-
a.
Changing the
position of the stack spacers above or below the stem.
-
b.
Rotating the
handlebars to take advantage of their 40 mm of rise.
-
c.
Exchanging the
stem for another size. (Return postage-paid, receive
replacement free of charge)
-
-
For riders likely to use the
Transition for most of their growth-spurt years, we offer
the $50 Growth Kit. It includes the 350 mm seat
post and a choice of three stems of varying size (75 mm x
40°,
90 mm x 40°,
105 mm x 40°,
120 mm x 40°,
and 135 mm x 30°
rise). This option enables fitting on the fly for the
duration of Transition’s service life.
