Chapter 13
Honeypot

13.1 Honeypot Overview

Selecting Honeypot will open a window entitled Honeypot Maintenance.

This option is only available to System Level Administrators.

Honeypot email addresses can be entered in to detect Spam emails. A "fake" user can be created who should not receive any emails. If emails are sent to this fake user or domain, the emails are detected by PostalCare, then designated as Spam.

The Honeypot Maintenance window allows you to add, disable, modify or delete any entry on the list.

A Honeypot is an "fake" email address created to lure spammers into sending emails to this organization. The honeypot address is spread out on the internet by placing it in webpages and other methods for spammers to "harvest" the address.

Once the spammers send their spam to this organization to the honeypot address, they can be marked as a spammer forever.

This can reduce spam emails sent from major spammer offenders to valid email recipients within this organization.

You can add new entries, modify, delete or disable any entry on the list here.

Click on the Add a New Honeypot Entry button to add a new honeypot email address.

Clicking on the Create Printable Report icon will create a printable .RTF file of the Honeypot list.

The Address column displays the Honeypot email address for each record listed.

The honeypot address can be modified by clicking on the Modify icon in the Action column.

The Created column displays date and time that each Honeypot address was added to the list (created).

The Last Activity column displays the date and time of the last email processed that was addressed to each Honeypot address in the list.

The Count column displays the number of emails that were addressed to each Honeypot address listed.

Click on the Refresh button to refresh the current window and update any counts and statistics that are displayed.

Clicking on the Add a New Honeypot Entry button will open a new pop-up window titled Add Honeypot. A new Honeypot email address can then be added to the Honeypot list.

Chapter 14
Attachments

14.1 Attachments and File Types Maintenance Overview

Selecting Attachments in the main menu will open a window entitled Attachment and File Type Maintenance. Attachment and File Type Maintenance is only available to System Administrators.

Attachment and File Type Maintenance allows you to:

Click on the Create Printable Report icon inside the table heading to create a printable .RTF file of the Attachment File Types list.

14.1.1 Allowing Attachments

The Allow Attachment setting allows System Administrators to either allow emails with attachments to be processed, or block all attachments. This setting affects the entire organization's email.

When attachments are allowed, a default attachment policy with the policy condition of Blocked File Types is activated. When PostalCare processes emails with attachments, it scans the list of attachment file types and allows attachment file types that are not blocked to be delivered, and blocks attachment file types that are set to be blocked.

When attachments are not allowed, emails with attachments are not allowed through PostalCare.

Select the radio button beside No or Yes to allow or disallow attachments. Then click on the Apply button. The window will refresh and the new setting will be saved. The default setting is to allow attachments.

14.1.2 Default Attachment File Types

PostalCare comes installed with a default list of attachment file types that are known to be potentially dangerous (contain viruses). The default file types cannot be deleted.

As emails come in through PostalCare, new file types are detected and added to the list. These new file types can be modified and deleted. The default setting on the new file type is allowed.

If attachments are allowed (the setting at the top of the Attachments and File Types Maintenance window), PostalCare scans the list of attachment file types for ones marked as blocked. When an email containing a blocked attachment file type is processed, the specified action of the attachments policy is taken on the email. The default action of this policy can be modified in Policy Maintenance (select "Policies" in the main menu).

14.1.3 File Types List

The File Types table displays a list of file type extensions configured into PostalCare. The heading displays the date that any statistics displayed (i.e., Count) are gathered from.

Click on the Refresh button at the top or bottom of the window to refresh the current window and update any counts and statistics that are displayed.

The list is displayed in alphabetical order. Any file type on the list with Default in the Created column cannot be deleted or modified. Only the Description field can be modified by clicking on the Modify icon in the Action column.

14.1.4 Add a New File Type

System Administrators can add new attachment file types to this list by clicking on the Add New Attachment File Type button at the top and bottom of this list. Attachment file types added manually are displayed with the delete icon available in the Action column. These file types can then be deleted from the list.

Clicking on the Add a New Attachment File Type button will open a new pop-up window entitled Add File Type. A file type is the format of a file indicated by its filename extension.

You can add a new file type (filename extension) in the Add File Type window, along with a description of the file type and whether you want to block this file type or not.

14.1.4.1 File Type

Type the exact attachment file type extension into the File Type field. The period "." before the extension is not required. For example:

  File Type: exe

Then proceed to the Description field to continue adding this new file type.

To cancel adding the new attachment file type at anytime, click on the Cancel button at the bottom of the window.
